Dapur bukan hanya dapur, tetapi pos perang

Today, large shipping companies such as Maersk, MSC, Carnival, actively employ women kok and even open special training programs for them. In Norway, for example, there is a network of training centers that prepare women for work on fishing and cargo ships. The course includes not only cooking but also maritime: basic navigation, safety, first aid.

In the United States, the Women's Marine Industry Fund was established in 2006 to actively promote women to the position of kok, helping them find work and adapt to male teams. In Europe, the WISTA (Women's International Shipping and Trading Association) operates, which lobbies for the interests of women at sea.

Cruise ships occupy a special place. Women chefs are no longer rare there: many of them lead entire culinary teams, develop menus for thousands of passengers. On such ships, gender equality is perceived as the norm, not as an exception.

Rusia dan CIS: jalan lambat tetapi pasti

In Russia, Ukraine, and other post-Soviet countries, the situation is changing more slowly. The fleet is still predominantly a male field, and a woman kok on a trading ship is a rare phenomenon. Nevertheless, there are examples of successful women chefs on fishing ships and on river cruise liners. During the Soviet era, women chefs worked on passenger ships (for example, on «Alexander Pushkin»), but they were almost not trained in nautical schools. And now the main problem is the psychological unpreparedness of ship owners and the male part of the crew. Many captains still think that a woman's place on the kitchen is «extra problems»: and conflicts, and attention, and inability to work in extreme conditions.

However, there are positive developments. Now about 2% of sailors in the world are women, and their number is increasing. Some Russian shipping companies have started hiring women as cooks for coastal navigation, and the feedback from the crew is positive. Perhaps it will take another decade before this stereotype disappears.

Khianati yang menghadapi wanita kok

Despite progress, working as a woman kok on a ship is a continuous challenge. Firstly, it is isolation. Months at sea without the opportunity to go ashore, without familiar friends and cafes, with limited internet — this is a serious test for the psyche. Many cannot bear it and leave after the first voyage.

The second challenge is physical effort. In the kitchen you have to lift heavy bags of flour, potatoes, meat blocks. If the ship does not have a cargo lift, all this has to be carried on your own. It is not easy for a woman to cope with this, especially if she is not trained.

The third challenge is the attitude of the crew. Even if the captain is friendly, among the crew may be those who will treat a woman as a foreigner, doubt her cooking, let off obscene jokes. This requires strong psychological protection.

The fourth challenge is living conditions. On many ships there are still no separate rooms for women kok, no separate showers. It is necessary to negotiate, change the schedule, which creates additional discomfort.

Mithos filem: "Pandu, pelajah, isteri beliau dan penakhur cintanya" dan kenyataan

In popular culture, the image of a woman kok is almost never encountered. There is a movie "Pandu, pelajah, isteri beliau dan penakhur cintanya", but there the woman is not a kok, but a character in a drama. In Soviet cinema, in the famous "Bersunyi matahari kosong di takar" and "Pirata XX abad", the koks are men. This shows how deep the stereotype is: sea and kitchen are male business.

Interestingly, in some modern detective series, where the action takes place on cruise ships, there are women chefs, but they are more exceptions that confirm the rule. However, the very fact of their appearance on the screen speaks of the fact that society gradually recognizes this right.

Penutup

Wanita kok di atas kapal is not just a profession, but a victory that has been achieved over decades. Behind it is the struggle against superstitions, prejudices, bureaucracy, and male chauvinism. Today, this profession is accessible to women, but it remains one of the most difficult and undervalued. However, those who decide to take this step often find their calling in the sea and become indispensable members of the crew. The sea is no longer a male world when a woman, who can not only feed well but also warm the soul, appears in the kitchen.
